That’s great… but when is Keystone going to finish the, 5 year and running, hotel project in the Illinois Building?
CMA. – the Intercontinental Hotel project is currently under construction. I would think it will be ready for business by the end of 2033.
This will be a transformational project. I’m excited to see the renderings and what other development will follow.
This is great news! It will further expand the Stadium Village district south of downtown. Lots of momentum going in and around Lucas Oil and the Fieldhouse. It’s going to be fun watching all this evolve over time.

I tried to hear about this on local radio this AM. But all the sports was the media trying to prop up the Pacers with the NBA draft. Someone needs to tell them the NBA holds little interest to most of us any longer. And the draft? are kidding?
Just think, even less care about this kiddie club soccer team.
The Pacers had their highest pick since Rick Smits…it was a big deal. But yes the local sports shows should be covering this as well as it is very exciting news.

To be fair, the story is only a few hours old. IBJ did great reporting on this. Reading between the lines, this story may have triggered the Indy Eleven announcement early this morning. Plus, the “other” local media sites are only now re-reporting on the news. It probably did not/could not have made their outlines. But I will concede your bigger point that soccer (football) isn’t the most popular sport in this country, or this state, or this city. We’re a basketball state, first and foremost. Also, teams can come and go, but stadia are a physical reminder of the presence of that team/sport. Just look at Lucas Oil and how it dominates the skyline, and is even more imposing when you’re standing in its shadow. Eleven Park will hopefully help to broaden the appeal of soccer in the city. Between the planned opening in 2025 and the US hosting the World Cup in 2026, I hope we see an explosion of The Beautiful Game.
More taxpayer welfare for professional athletes and their owners who can’t pay their own way because the market won’t support it.

James P. – how many years did you deduct the cost of the annual interest on your home loan mortgage? That too is taxpayer welfare (especially in the mortgage’s early years when more interest than principal is paid). Other deductions you may have taken would include charitable contributions, again subsidized by your fellow taxpayers. Any yet none of these contribute to the economy like the hospital industry supported by the sporting events, conventions, and concerts that occur downtown. So be careful of pointing fingers at others when the guy in your mirror is also benefited from “taxpayer welfare.”

I hope this moves faster than the Intercontinental Hotel renovation. What’s the status of the hotel? It’s been under construction for several years with no current activity. Is the project dead?
There has been nearly constant activity for months. Most of the work at this point is occurring on the interior.
Brent B. – You have only feelings and no proof that the ROI is positive. I paid cash for my home and no charitable contributions that I have deducted, so you are wrong again. Tell that to your mirror. These subsidies are direct transfer payments from taxpayers to athletes and owners. Let the market decide their pay, not government welfare.

James M. ~ I seriously doubt that James P. paid cash for his own home, no matter how “rich” he might be. If he did, he reduced the amount of cash available to invest elsewhere. Paying mortgage interest costs (even before deducting them from federal taxes) is always lower than the ROI on typical investments. Every smart investor knows that leveraging debt is a smart way to build wealth, whether in real estate or even the stock market (if James P. had bought a single share of Berkshire Hathaway stock in 2017, he would have by now seen a 57% ROI even with the stock market’s recent collapse). I’ll give him the benefit of doubt that he maybe did make charitable contributions, but that his financial state is such that he files taxes using the short form. Thus, he isn’t allowed to deduct those on his return.
Brent, if you don’t pay much in mortgage interest, you generally can’t get your deductions over the minimum to itemize deductions…hence no charitable deduction regardless of the amount you give away.
