Salmon constantly cycle between periods of fast growth and periods of stagnant growth. The scientists at AquaBounty were able to manipulate the growth cycle genes in such a way that salmon stay in their “fast growth” phase for basically their entire lives, which allow them to grow faster and, because the salmon mature faster, it allows the farmers to waste fewer resources on feeding and taking care of the salmon.
The chance of these salmon breaking loose from a landlocked town in Indiana and out-competing wild salmon in a natural ecosystem is extremely low. Products like this are products that will save oceans and other water ecosystems from destruction. Destruction from salmon fishing is very widespread, and I’ve seen it myself off the coast of Tasmania. There is a fundamental misunderstanding of what GMOs are and what the risks and benefits are, but it is clear that GMOs are a big piece of the sustainability puzzle.
The same people that are complaining about farmed salmon and GMO foods eat chemistry experiments known as veggie frankenburgers made in a lab. Makes no sense but when have they?
Yuk
Feeding more people with healthy nutritious salmon for lower cost and more sustainability looks like a win!
