This is obvious to anyone who has to use a camera at work. The cameras are the problem, not the meetings themselves.
Since the start of the remote-work phase, I have turned on my camera only a few times, and I ban them from meetings I lead.
Cameras are the problem, no face no distraction. We have been working at home for over 2 years now and brainstorming has never been a problem. This is just a way to move people back into empty office space and out of their remote settings that are much more productive on most days.
Prior to the pandemic, I wouldn’t use the camera and just joined through audio. I found it easier to brainstorm on the fly when I could focus on what was being said.
Now, it seems expected to join with video, so you are more aware of how you look or making ‘camera eye-contact’.
