What sacrifices are these people willing to make to become homeowners?… My first house was god awful and styled from the 70’s. It came complete with a leaking roof, nasty carpet, mold, and not in the best location yet it qualified for a conventional loan.

Yes. Make big unpopular sacrifices or do nothing and rent. It’s all about the mindset, saving, and knocking out small goals.
Continued: There’s nothing wrong with renting. Unless you know the market, prices, and have stable income buying a house makes no sense. Some of the people interviewed “were recently married”, aka a terrible time to buy a house. The standard path to home ownership is overrated.
