One thought on “Indiana House budget would expand vouchers, limit poverty aid for schools

  1. It is difficult to understand the lack of an increase for schools serving our most needy children, yet increasing the expansion of private school vouchers. $33 million would certainly help those students who have not been able (for many reasons) to maintain their education, while schools have been virtual, with very little opportunity to get engaged with their teachers. Those schools serving students who live in poverty or serving students that have fallen behind grade level will need to provide more services and more remediation. Where is the flaw in that logic?
Meanwhile, the voucher program has taken significant dollars from public education and offered to those families who choose not participate in a public education. Initially vouchers were developed to “increase” the opportunity for more middle and low income families to have a choice to attend a private school. However, the number of seats within the private schools have not increased (no expansions of private schools for more seats). Even with vouchers we are not serving more children in private schools, we are only refunding tuition for students who’s families planned to attend private schools regardless of vouchers.
Private school families have often stated that they pay a lot of taxes for education, so it is only right that they get to use it. As has been debated, I do not use the parks, the library or IndyGo, but I do not get a voucher to reimburse my family.
