A regression of society. It’s shameful that we feel the need to arm ourselves as if it’s 1812 and the British or french are coming.
The original 1816 Indiana Constitution:
Sect. 20. That the people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves, and the state; and that the military shall be kept in strict subordination to the civil power.
The current one:
Section 32 . The people shall have a right to bear arms, for the defense of themselves and the State.
Wouldn’t “progress” be amending the Constitution either way, whether like Chris F. probably wants to ban guns or the opposite way requiring some permit from the government.
Eric: The United States Constitution mandates that firearms may be kept under a “well-regulated militia.” This is likely going to run into hiccups in the circuit courts.
A.T., part of my point is that under our system, we should be first looking to the state constitution and laws. Part of what is screwed up is reflexively looking to federal rules/courts. That is exactly the opposite of the point of our supposed system. Second point, if anyone, overzealous government wanting to force permits, or overzealous busybodies wanting to overturn the natural right to bear arms, at the least shouldn’t they do it the proper way, by constitutional amendment.
Eric M.- I would take away any long gun designed as a “man-killer” that exceeds 10 rounds. You and I can keep the hunting guns we inherited from our grandparents and the pistols we have purchased.
agree 100%. its absolutely ludacris to associate the weapons of today with the single shot musket around with the constitution was compiled. more guns = more problems.
So, Chris, please ask the legislature and the US Congress to add that to the Indiana and US Constitutions.
So militias can storm capitols at ease?
Don’t make no difference ain’t nobody got no danged bullets, anyways
