Indiana reports 22 more COVID deaths, 1,897 new cases

The Indiana State Department of Health on Friday reported 22 more deaths from COVID-19, raising the cumulative total to 15,930.

The seven-day moving average of new deaths rose dipped from 20 to 19 per day, the health department said.

The department reported 1,897 more cases of COVID-19, up from 2,161 the previous day. The cumulative total rose to 1,007,681.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 remained at 1,445 on Thursday. Hospitalizations reached a recent peak of 2,687 on Sept. 13. COVID patients occupy almost 19% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds.

More than 3.34 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Friday at 5 a.m., after a daily increase of 2,747. More than 260,000 Hoosiers have already gotten vaccine boosters, after a daily increase of 7,192.

The health department said 59.1% of Indiana residents 18 and older are now fully vaccinated.

The state released the latest statistics for so-called breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday, reflecting data through Oct. 14. The numbers, which are updated weekly, showed that 52,484 Hoosiers who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have since tested positive for the virus, while 1,097 required hospitalization and 531 died. The average age of a breakthrough death was 78 years old.
