Indiana reports 81 more COVID deaths, rise in hospitalizations

The Indiana State Department of Health on Tuesday reported another 81 deaths from COVID-19, the highest number of deaths in the daily update since last Tuesday.

The seven-day moving average of new deaths rose from 20 to 26 per day, the health department said.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 ended a six-day streak of declines, increasing from 2,432 on Sunday to 2,477 on Tuesday. Almost a third (30.8%) of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients.

The state on reported 2,673 new cases of COVID-19, increasing the cumulative total to 937,221.

More than 3.21 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Tuesday at 5 a.m., after a daily increase of 6,838. Department statistics say 58.7% of Indiana residents 18 and older are now fully vaccinated.
