Indiana sees 29 more COVID deaths, decrease in hospitalizations

The Indiana State Department of Health on Thursday reported 2,326 new cases of COVID-19, down from 2,675 the previous day, bringing the pandemic total in the state to 979,000 cases.

The department also reported 29 new deaths from COVID, raising the total to 15,442.

The seven-day moving average of new deaths remained at 23 per day, the health department said. Almost 90% of those who have died of COVID in Indiana are at least 60 years old.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 decreased from 1,878 on Tuesday to 1,838 on Wednesday. About 22% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients. Hospitalizations reached a recent peak of 2,687 on Sept. 13.

More than 3.29 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Wednesday at 5 a.m., after a daily increase of 5,455. Department statistics show 60% of Indiana residents 18 and older are now fully vaccinated.
