Tim Lanane

The Indiana state Senate’s former Democratic leader has decided he won’t seek reelection next year and leave the Legislature after 24 years.

Sen. Tim Lanane of Anderson announced his decision Monday, saying he would finish his current term that runs until the November 2022 election.

Lanane was minority leader in the Republican-dominate Senate from 2012 through 2020.

Lanane’s reelection prospects took a hit when new Republican-drawn election districts approved last month removed Democratic-leaning Muncie from his district and put both him and GOP Sen. Mike Gaskill of Pendleton in a new district with a more Republican tilt.

Lanane told The Herald Bulletin he had decided against seeking reelection earlier this year but didn’t want to announce his intentions until after the once-a-decade redistricting was completed. He said it had been an honor to serve district residents in the Senate for so long.

“I feel it is time to thank them for their confidence and allow a new person to step into that role,” Lanane said.

    1. Typical is correct. Through redistricting, the republican legislature continues to select their voters as opposed to the voters selecting their legislators. The proof is in the numbers, 54% of voters are republican, whereas, 80% of the State Senate is republican. Had Lanane, a very popular public servant in his district announced his retirement before the redistricting was complete, the republicans would have used that information to expand their super-majority even higher. Thank you Senator for your many years of excellent service.

  1. Not valid to equate percentage of voters registered Republican to percentage of State Senators that are Republican. That simple-minded approach fails to account for registered Democrats that cross over to vote Republican, as well as Independents and how they vote. Liberals despise “rule by majority”. It interferes with their preferred “rule by very small minority of elitists that think they are smarter than everyone else”.

    1. A reminder that it’s the Republicans who stormed the US Capitol when they lost the last election. You can whine about what Democrats say, but it’s what Republicans actually DO that is a problem.

If you think there was voter fraud in the 2020 election that would have changed the result, you are simply wrong. Full stop.

    1. Indeed, Richard S. Anyone who doesn’t acknowledge the voter fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election is whistling past the graveyard.
