  1. Boles is right. You can’t adequately describe the Indy 500 because it takes “being there” as a frame of reference. My dad brought his kids to the track in the 1960s for what were then called “time trials.” In my high school years I came with classmates and experienced the old Snake Pit inside the first turn. More recently I’ve been joined by old neighborhood friends from the East Coast who caravanned with their kids, curious about the race. None could believe an auto race could beat a Super Bowl or World Series. Until they came an experienced it. This weekend I am taking a cousin from Austin, Texas who was born and raised in Lafayette but who has never been to the race. I betting it won’t be a “one and done” trip for him.
