I don’t have a dog in this fight, but this makes me sick as a dog. Our small-government local-control home-rule Republicans are sure spending a lot of time barking up the wrong tree. They’re conservative alright, like a dog with a bone when it comes time to prevent any positive changes in this state. I hope they stop chasing cars and let the dog see the rabbit soon enough to keep our state out of the doghouse. Now, I’ve got to see a man about a dog.

Indianapolis Animal Care Services (formerly Animal Control Center) recently issued an urgent plea for people to adopt animals from IACS due to massive overcrowding. They were taking in 45 animal surrenders per day, and have had to suspend intake except in emergency situations! Many of these animals, although adoptable, are subject to euthanasia simply due to overcrowding. They literally have cages in the hallways! IACS does the best they can, but they are in an untenable situation with short staffing, underfunding and over-population.
Additionally, even with “certifications” many of the dog breeders are puppy mills with poor treatment of the animals and substandard living conditions, as well as unscrupulous breeding practices that result in animals with health and behavior issues.
In addition, the Republican super-majority in the state legislature needs to keep their noses out of local municipalities’ business. What ever happened to the Republican Party being the party of local control? Or is this a situation where it wasn’t their idea, so it must be bad. This applies the the pet store ordinances, the right-turn-on-red issue (saves lives) and countless other issues where the Reps have overstepped their bounds to grab power and impose their will where it is none of their business!!!
I support the City-County Council in their banning of the sale of pets from breeders. It’s the right thing to do! DON’T BREED, ADOPT!
Since when has the Republican Party been the party of “local control?” Cities, towns, counties are not sovereign entities. People on the left think the relationship between the national government and states is the same as between states and local governments. And they would be wrong.
The City of Indianapolis local government is constantly wanting to raise local taxes and fees. Who has stopped them? Our state legislators. And that is a very good thing.
