5 thoughts on “Indianapolis Public Schools struggles to recruit racially diverse staff, review shows

  1. Obviously the staff ratios are not going to match the makeup of the student body – the students were all born in the last 20 years and the staff were born in the 60s-90s and the demographics of our country back then are different than now.

  2. “staff of color were not likely to recommend others apply to the district.” – why would they? I would rather a job in a different district with less headaches!

  3. Typical Chalkbeat garbage. Stating the obvious (at least to non Democrats), but why is “racial diversity” important? Shouldn’t the goal be to recruit the best at their jobs, or is a political football more important than kids’ education?

  4. When I worked at IPS in the 1990s is was VERY diverse. The problem was IPS started RIFing all the non-white people. Many PoC got RIFed in the 1990s and beyond. IPS started “whitewashing” its staff via the RIF. So, IPS needs to address keeping the PoC on staff and simply “doubling down” on hiring more PoC. It is really just that simple. Not hard—easy fix.

  5. What every school system needs most are great teachers. Such teachers come in all colors, all ages and both genders. It is ironic that almost.seven decades after the Supreme Court held that it is unconstitutional to require that students be taught by an instructor of the same race Progressives are now pushing the old segregationist line of employing and assigning teachers based on race. In evaluating racial balance in the IPS teaching staff, the first question ought to be whether there are enough available and qualified teachers of color to bring their proportion of the district wide faculty up to parity with the percentage of students of color in the system. The second question should be how to increase the racial mix of the faculty when it is illegal to hire on the basis of race. The final question is this: Do those “struggling” to achieve racial parity in IPS staffing understand the rules of the road when driving toward that objective?
