  1. These career pathways are the only thing keeping a number of students from dropping out, and I question the decision to phase our programs that “do not provide credentials to prepare students for college or careers, like certifications” or “work experience”. Why doesn’t IPS make sure these programs DO qualify for certifications and work experience?

Nail techs make more money than many teachers. So why phase out cosmetology?

Indianapolis has lost a number of restaurants during the pandemic, but the long term trend is for more women working outside the home and greater consumer reliance on restaurants rather than home cooking. Indianapolis also is continuing to build hotels and expand its convention and tourism business (after the pandemic is over). These visitors to our city won’t be cooking on hot plates in their hotel rooms. So I question why IPS is cutting culinary training.

For 30 years, our business community has pushed college for nearly everyone as if every student should go to college. There are a great number of career paths and apprenticeship programs that do not require college, are a much better fit for many students, and provide livage wages. Yes we should monitor the market for employment opportunities, but as a college grad who sees too many other grads not making a livable wage, I see a definite consultant bias – AGAIN – for college that is out-sized with too little attention to vocational courses that would serve a number of students much better.

In addition, the district has had difficulty in hiring teachers both certified in their job field and trained as teachers.

  2. I so wish IBJ would restore the ability to edit and correct comments. I hit the ‘post’ button by mistake and needed to proof my letter. Will the editing function be restored in the future?

    1. Nancy, we’ve never offered the ability for people to change their comments after they were posted. You can imagine the problems that would cause if people could change previous postings.
