Indiana’s COVID-19 death toll climbs past 22,000

The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday reported 47 new deaths from COVID-19, raising the statewide pandemic total to 22,037.

Indiana has seen its COVID death toll rise by nearly 1,000 over the past three weeks and by 2,000 over the past five weeks.

Meanwhile, statewide hospitalizations due to COVID fell to 751 as of Tuesday, the lowest number since July 25.

Hospitalizations have plummeted 79% since hitting a pandemic high of 3,519 on Jan. 13. COVID patients occupy 6.9% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds.

The health department reported 452 new COVID cases on Wednesday, down from a single-day record of 17,684 new cases just more than five weeks ago.

More than 3.68 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Monday at 5 a.m. More than 1.7 million Hoosiers have gotten vaccine boosters.

The department said 60.6% of Indiana residents 12 and older and 62.6% of residents 18 and older are fully vaccinated.
