  1. If I ask for someone to put a pastry in a bag and hand it to me, it does not require a tip. They did not talk to me, make anything, serve anything at my table, clean up after me, or whatever. In fact the same pastry place simply hands me a cup and I have to get my own coffee. What did they do for me that requires a tip?

I do not tip the meat counter butchers, the cake decorators, or the grocery sushi stand. It really irritates me to be asked for a tip before any service is provided. I have had orders wrong or delayed or received bad service. Wages should be provided at an adequate level.

  2. ““Tipping is about making sure the people who are performing that service for you are getting paid what they’re owed,” said Schenker”

You are paid what you’re owed – $15/hour.

  3. Recently I went into a retail store in Chicago to purchase a box of chocolates. I browsed their selections and picked the box I wanted without any assistance. When I went to check out they asked me if I wanted to tip. For what? scanning a bar code at the cash register?

  4. totally agree tipping is getting out of hand in the USA.. I have seen a 30% suggestion as a gratuity on a receipt! We patronize the business by paying for the goods or service and now we are supposed to also supplement the workers’ income by tipping. if the owner cannot afford to pay the staff fair wages then they should not be in business.

  5. I can see this entire discussion headed to courts nationwide. Resturants, uber drivers, dash food delivery services, handy men ect are we to be forced to pay for service no matter if it’s good or bad? I thought tipping was still a personal choice based on the costumers experience? People don’t like to be forced to do anything.

  6. If we want to eliminate tipping for service, then we need to start paying people in service industries a decent wage. That is to say, pay that allows them to live comfortably, afford rent in today’s outrageous rent market, put decent food on the table, and not have to work more than 40 hours a week to do so. I don’t disagree that it seems absurd to tip for picking up fast-service food at the counter. But I do it anyway, and I do generously, not because of great service, but because the human being who has assisted me deserves reasonable compensation by virtue of simply being a human being, and the establishment most often doesn’t provide reasonable compensation.

  7. Tipping at a self-service place seems odd. But a small tip at a coffee place is reasonable provided that the service is reasonable. And, restaurants that now proudly and prominently advise a 20% service charge to provide a ‘living wage’ allows one to make a decision a priori. In these cases, tipping need not be done. If service or food is grossly unsatisfactory, one simply does not return. However, it’s a bit of a cheat to apply a service charge of 20% to the grand total, when the 20% should be applied to food and beverage only. Why should one tip on tax.

    1. Agreed. Also, now some restaurants charge a fee for paying with credit card and the suggested tip is based on the food/beverage total, the tax and the credit card fee. It should just be based on the food/beverage total.

  8. I agree that digital payment methods create some controversial issues as it relates to tipping. However, I see it as a much more secure way to protect your credit card information. Kind of trade off.
Also, while I certainly don’t tip by a percent of my grocery bill. If the service is good, I don’t hesitate to reward my local bagger and cashier at the grocery each with a fiver, or at least a few bucks each. I think it’s well deserved and it normally is always appreciated, which is evident by their smiles and thank yous. And it’s always a fiver if the cashier has to do it all, which is not unusual.

  9. My rule of thumb: Is employee who provided service likely being paid a tip-wage? ($5.12/hr) If yes, tip generously. If not, zero obligation. Pretty straightforward, imho.

I find it curious digital screens give people guilt – I find them funny, since it is designed to be impulsive on its face. Other than at my barber or a sit-down restaurant where they bring the machine out to the table, don’t think I’ve ever included an electronic tip in the cc device itself.
