The Indiana University Board of Trustees announced several approvals Friday. Among them are a project to double capacity at the IU School of Nursing at IUPUI and an increase in on-campus residence hall rates.
IU said the renovations at the nursing school will help increase teaching and simulation capacity in support of planned enrollment growth to help address a shortage of nurses both in Indiana and nationwide.
The project will add one skills lab, four simulation rooms, 10 debrief rooms and seven practice exam rooms on the third floor of the building. The school’s existing teaching lab will be relocated to a larger space on the same floor, the university said.
The first and second floors will see new office spaces, corridor updates, a refurbishment of an existing student learning space, and the creation of new informal learning and group study spaces.
Robin Newhouse, dean of the IU School of Nursing, said the renovations are essential for the additional undergraduate enrollment.
“Nursing practice requires high levels of knowledge, skill and science application to optimize health for people, families and communities,” Newhouse said in a news release. “Renovations will enhance student success by providing opportunities to gain experience in real world situations and prepare our students for practice as an IU nurse.”
The project will also include new support areas, including locker and changing rooms for students and patients, and additional storage.
The board also announced increases to on-campus residence hall rates at three of its campuses.
The standard room and board rate on the IU Bloomington campus will increase 1.34%, or $157 per year. IUPUI rates will rise 1.48%, or $184 per year. Room and board at IU South Bend will increase 1.3%, or $82 for the most common room type.
The university attributes the increases to inflation, which has affected food costs.
“While inflation nationally ran above 8% for most of the past year, IU has been able to implement room and board increases at or near the lowest levels in over a decade,” IU Treasurer Donald Lukes said in written remarks.
Room and board on the IU Southeast campus will remain unchanged. The university did not mention any changes to its campuses in Kokomo and Gary.
