By ‘accident’ (rain delay) we found out the benefit of racing later in the day. The 500 from its beginnings thru the mid 50’s generally took much longer to complete because of the slower speeds. It is no longer a 4-6 hour, day long event. It’s been reduced to more like 2.5-3 hours. In 1911, Ray Harroun, the winner, averaged less than 100 mph. This great event does not need to begin as early as it has for the last 108 times. The late afternoon, early evening battle drew a bigger TV audience. The cooler temps provided for better racing. The Captain, Miles and Boles might look at a 2PM start from now on. Better for everyone.
