We wish to congratulate the members of the City-County Council as well as those who worked hard advocating for the safety and health of their fellow citizens. The history of this council is one that continues to update its own work for the good of Indianapolis. Proposal Number 224, 2024, implements a Vision Zero Task Force and Action Plan demonstrating the council’s care and commitment to the most vulnerable in our community.

Science has linked being inactive and sitting too much with higher risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, colon and lung cancers and early death. Only about one in five adults and teens get enough exercise to maintain good health. The American Heart Association and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend at least 150 minutes per week of moderate activity for adults and 60 minutes per day for kids.

Creating safe spaces for adults and children to become more active in their daily lives improves the mental and physical health of everyone in Indianapolis. Walking to parks, school, shopping and for fun has big wins for all of us. Moving more:

Lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and cancer.

Lowers the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

 Improves some pregnancy outcomes.

Improves sleep quality and lessens sleep apnea.

Lessens weight gain and reduces obesity and related chronic health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes.

 Improves bone health and balance.

Improves cognition, quality of life and overall well-being by reducing depression and anxiety.

The American Heart Association commends city leaders for committing to improve the livability, vibrancy and quality of life in our city for all citizens while positively impacting public health and safety. This proposal continues to address disparities in both our urban and suburban infrastructure to allow for all types of safe transit, whether that is walking, rolling or biking for all ages and abilities. We support and applaud your efforts to promote active living and thank you for your service to Indianapolis and Marion County.
