“Know ye not that a prince and a great man has fallen this day … .” (II Samuel 3:38). Such is our lament upon the news of the passing of James Morris who, in so many ways, modeled the best of what it means to be a Hoosier [“James Morris, Pacers exec and longtime local business leader, dies at 81,” IBJ.com, July 13].

Jim was a friend, a business entrepreneur, a mediator, a leader, a servant, a connector, a bridge builder, a proud patriot, a man of faith, a generous man, a man of peace. His tireless efforts, his practical wisdom and his modest and gentle humanity helped to make our city, our state, our nation and our world better places.

The Irish author, Niall Williams, writes: “Everybody carries a world, but certain people change the air about them.” Such a person was Jim Morris.

During a recent visit with Jim just a few days before his death, he was his usual affable and hospitable self, inquiring about the welfare of others and speaking admiringly and gratefully about his community and, of course, his IU, the Pacers and the Indiana Fever.

To his beloved Jackie and the entire family, our warm condolences on your irreparable loss and our deep gratitude for having shared Jim with all of us. May the love and joys of a lifetime bring you comfort, and may Jim’s legacy of goodness live on as a source of inspiration and peace.
