The 49,600-square-foot store is set to open Thursday, July 25, at 744 E. Tournament Trail in Westfield’s Wheeler Landing development district, just north of State Road 32 and west of U.S. 31.
The new Market District store will offer a grab-and-go prepared food section, bakery, deli counter with meats, cheeses and charcuterie, and event catering. The store, which was built on a six acres, has 268 parking spaces, including 10 bike parking spots.
“We are thrilled to introduce our new Market District location to our Westfield neighbors,” Market District Senior Director Paul Abbott said in written remarks. “We have been hard at work creating a unique and inviting culinary destination, and we can’t wait to share it with the community.”
Market District will sell products from Indiana brands such as Urban Ladle, Simplicity Juice, Ghyslain Chocolatier, Broad Ripple Chips and Tulip Tree Creamery. The store will employ culinary experts, wine and beer consultants, cheesemongers and charcuterie specialists, butchers, fishmongers, professional chefs, bakers and cake decorators.
Westfield’s Market District will open at 6 a.m. July 25. Each of the first 50 shoppers will receive a $200 Market District gift card. Grand opening ceremonies will include a DJ, product sampling, prize wheels, giveaways and outdoor yard games.
Giant Eagle submitted plans in September 2022 to the city of Westfield for the Market District store.
Giant Eagle, which has more than 470 retail outlets ranging from convenience stores to supermarkets, swooped into the Indianapolis market in October 2015 by opening a 120,000-square-foot Market District supermarket at 11505 N. Illinois St. in Carmel.
The massive store, which has a pharmacy, beauty salon, restaurant space and banquet center, employs more than 500 people. Osteria Carmel, an Italian restaurant operated by celebrity chef Fabio Viviani, operated at the store before the restaurant closed in May.
In 2018, Giant Eagle acquired Indiana-based Ricker Oil Co. Inc., the owner of 56 Ricker’s convenience stores and gas stations throughout central Indiana, and later rebranded those stores with the GetGo Cafe + Market name.
Giant Eagle Inc. was founded in 1931 and has a portfolio of stores throughout western Pennsylvania, north central Ohio, northern West Virgnia, Maryland and Indiana.
Giant Eagle is one of the 40 largest privately owned companies in the nation, according to Forbes magazine. It employed more than 36,000 people and had about $11.4 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2023.

I’m surprised this happened. I honestly never have seen the Carmel Market District all that busy, and figured their one grocery location for several years was signs of a failed expansion.
I wonder when we might hit bougie grocery store saturation.
