Yeah, DNPs are – by definition – doctors. They should be allowed to use the correct title, although perhaps it should be mandatory to have “D.N.P” written after their name just like many MDs and DOs do.
Further, I personally wouldn’t have any issue with seeing a DNP for primary care – just the same way that I wouldn’t have an issue seeing an MD or DO. I don’t think that anybody else should have reservations about who they see for primary care as long as they are a DNP, MD, or DO. They’re all qualified.
I’ve had more issues with overconfident PAs than anything else, but I digress.
Let’s just make sure that the public is educated about different education paths for healthcare providers.
Indiana could care less about healthcare. Our State has NEVER wanted to have enough healthcare professionals of all types. We do not have enough MA, RN, NP, PA, MD or DO. This does include all of the other type of healthcare workers.
For example, we desperately need two more research medical schools. There needs to be an expansion of residency programs to train more primary care physicians, i.e. Internal medicine, family practice and pediatricians.
The problem is many patients don’t actually know what any of those letters (ex., DNP) mean because nurses like to put an alphabet soup after their name, which just confuses everybody!
It won’t be long before the nurse “doctors” will want to be doing surgery and anything else that physicians go to school for many many years to train for…mark my words!
