The first Talbot Street Art Fair was held on Mother’s Day weekend in 1956. It was chaired by Leonard Wallace Jr., a student at the Herron School of Art. The event, which featured 15 exhibitors and was attended by an estimated 1,500 people, took place on Talbot Street (later changed to Talbott Street though the fair’s name was never changed), which at the time was known as the alley between Pennsylvania and Delaware streets. Today, the fair is recognized as one of the top art shows in the United States and is the oldest juried art fair in central Indiana. This year, the event has been canceled because of the pandemic.
