Subscribe NowThe Indianapolis Brewing Co., which was founded in 1887 with the merger of three local breweries, was once one of the nation’s largest breweries. It won medals at the Paris Exposition of 1900 and the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. It survived Prohibition by building a non-alcoholic product base and making legal medicinal tonics. The brewery operated at 316 Agnes St., which is now University Boulevard, until 1948, when the company’s president went to jail, accused of short-filling bottles.
