Minkler

Josh Minkler, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana since 2015, announced on Wednesday that he is resigning this month and will be joining an Indianapolis-area law firm.

Minkler, 57, led the Southern District during a period it won convictions in a string of high-profile cases, including the prosecution of top executives of nursing home giant American Senior Communities for a fraud-and-kickback scheme.

The press release from the Southern District included laudatory comments from across the political spectrum, from current Attorney General William Barr and U.S. Sen. Todd Young to Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, who was U.S. attorney from 2010 to 2014.

“Josh Minkler has served Indiana well for more than two decades—first as an assistant United States Attorney, then as my first assistant and, most recently, as the United States attorney for the Southern District of Indiana,” Hogsett said in a statement. “He is a man of integrity and ethics, proving time and time again that his commitment to our community was paramount in his decision-making and leadership.”

It was not immediately clear which law firm Minkler will be joining. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to a call.

Eric Holder, attorney general under President Barack Obama, appointed Minkler as U.S. attorney in February 2015. In June of that year, he was unanimously appointed to serve in the role by the Southern District’s judges.

After President Donald Trump won election in 2016, he appointed Minkler to remain in the position, and the U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed him for the post.

Minkler will step down as U.S. attorney on Saturday. Following his departure, First Assistant U.S. Attorney John Childress will become acting U.S. attorney.
