Westfield & ‘Visit HamCo’ should work on a strategy to strengthen its tourism industry. Grand Park does a good job of getting people to Westfield/HamCo, but traveling sports families don’t spend a lot of money.
A water park could really help fix that, and it’s funny that Westfield used to have a big water park on 191st/US31. An amusement park could work out well too. Either option would maintain Westfield’s image as a place for kids & families to visit, but introduce a type of tourism that yields more spending than youth sports. Additionally, this type of path towards higher-dollar tourism should be much easier than any path involving a space museum.
But Westfield has to make sure that it’s big enough to be a draw on its own. Depending on youth sports ‘tourism’ to funnel people into a small water park would just be more of the same. It might be worth some private investment, but probably not any significant subsidies.
A water park could be a great attraction for kids and families, just not the ones whose kids are playing in the tournaments. That being said, travel sports families do spend a LOT of money for hotel rooms, food (if we were from out-of-town, we’d spend $ for groceries, as well as anything we spent at a restaurant or a concession stand). And, actually, the space museum is something we would’ve done ahead of the water park.
