Covering exsisting conditions was used by the insurance industry to up prices and deductibles. The solution might be to negotiate the deductibles and premiums down, by putting the Exsisting conditions folk under Medicaid.
Let’s see here — Healthcare.gov is wonky to begin with. If you’re unemployed it throws you out and doesn’t give you options to choose from. Then you get an email about being on medicare because you answered a question. THEN the real fun begins — the machinegun calls from Anthem, United Health, IU Health, and MD Wise — all telling me they’re my healthcare provider—
Yeah, I’m not overly impressed with how this whole janky system is rigged. I get punished for being healthy (private insurance costs). I get punished for answering things honestly (questionnaires up the wazoo). I get punished if I don’t have medical insurance (welcome to retail medical care). I get punished by those who’re on chronics for making bad choices (by having all my costs jacked up because “they” need it). Yeah — the NHS in the UK may have its issues — but at least it’s a universal backstop to help everyone. What we got is a Republican joke
Politics aside, this three (3) month open enrollment window will help many Hoosiers in need enroll in a health plan. People who currently have no insurance or have a short term plan, or who may not be able to afford COBRA. Many individuals & families will qualify for premium tax credits (subsidies) reducing their monthly premium cost and may also qualify for a second subsidy called a “cost share reduction” (whereby a qualifying applicant can get a silver plan with a reduced deductible/copay.) Subsidies are determined by household income; so for this 3 month open enrollment period, 2021 AGI should be estimated. If household income is below 138% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), applicants will be directed to HIP 2.0 which is Medicaid and asked to apply for HIP. For applicants with household income expected to be above 138% but less than 400% of the FPL, subsidies are available. Indiana has two markets; Ambetter MHS and CareSource. Plans are guarantee issue, cover pre-existing conditions (according to the Plan.) While applicants with household income above 400% of the FPL will not qualify for any subsidies, this demographic of Hoosiers can still enroll in a marketplace health plan (ObamaCare) and will pay for 100% of the premium cost.
