Architect Craig McCormick designed the 3,960-square-foot house—plus carriage house—at 1648 Cornell Ave. with a musician and an urbanite in mind.

And so each of its three levels has a different purpose—and a different feel.

“The basement is originally designed as a space for a music studio, an introverted and focused space,” McCormick writes about the house, located in the Kennedy King neighborhood, near 1th Street and College Avenue.

“The ground level is designed as a social space, connecting street and backyard through an open plan,” he said. “The upper level is designed as a private space, separating spaces that can be sleeping or quiet office spaces from the more lively lower levels.”

Throughout, the 4-bedroom, 3-1/2 bath home (and the 1-bedroom space above the garage) is cozy and eclectic, with a mid-century vibe not only in the furnishings the owners brought to the house but even in its build. A mid-century modern credenza, for example, has been repurposed as a master bath vanity. The kitchen has slab-front, warm wood cabinets. And a vintage Majestic fire hood gas fireplace keeps the screened-in porch toasty.

The owners have infused the house, built in 2019, with even more mid-century charm, with vintage tables, dressers and cabinets but also retro curtains, lamps and art work.

There’s nothing that feels old about the technology or the fixtures here, though. Smart locks, doors, switches and cameras offer security and convenience. The kitchen features a long island—with plenty of room for barstools—with a stone counter and waterfall edge

A custom-milled floating staircase leads to three bedrooms and two baths, a master walk-in closet and large shower and a laundry room. A full basement with high ceilings painted black and a cork floor houses the fourth bedroom and another full bath as well as a large living area.

A screened in porch at the back door leads to a long backyard—the lot is 6,800 square feet—and the three-car garage. Above is the one-bedroom apartment, with a full kitchen and laundry area.

The exterior is sided with wood accents a bright blue door, which the architect said “is designed to welcome prosperity and tranquility.”

The neighborhood is transitional but with plenty of amenities, with the Monon Trail and pubs and restaurants nearby. Bottleworks District, which is set to open this month, is a half-mile down the trail.

The house is listed for $650,000 by Kelly Huff of F.C. Tucker Co.-Keystone at the Crossing.
