Hogsett is useless. If the city doesn’t start implementing an aggressive anti-panhandling policy downtown, downtown is done. Infuriating, after investing billions on tax dollars and other investments over the last several decades. Nobody will feel safe going downtown, and conventions won’t come back.
It is a shame with all the money that the city gets for homelessness, why cant these people be put in housing?

Another example of inept government that is ruining our city. Includes our buffoon mayor and dysfunctional city council. The homeless need to be rounded up every night and put in shelters, and an ordinance must be passed making it illegal to sleep on public sidewalks, alleys, etc. Enforce this enough times and the homeless and panhandlers will get the message and move to some other poorly run Democrat city.
Are you going to go round them up? The police? A band of merry men deemed the homeless patrol? Where are they going to go if shelters are at limited capacity? How about some of the vacant buildings downtown becoming more and more of an eyesore. How are the going to know an ordinance was passed? Watching the worthless biased news reports on their pretend tv’s that are plugged into the sidewalk? How is the ordinance going to be enforced? Make them pay a fine – oh, wait they don’t have any money…THEY ARE HOMELESS. Throw them in jail? At least they would get 3 hots and a cot and deloused. And once they get that message are they going to hop into their car and drive to Carmel or some other great city around here? Oh that’s right –THEY ARE HOMELESS AND DON’T HAVE VEHICLES TO TRAVEL AND MOVE TO ANOTHER CITY. Our government in this town is worthless. That is the only thing you said that makes any sense.
Tracy, most of these homeless people choose to be homeless. Many belong in mental health institutions and we need to have the fortitude to do the right thing and elect government officials who will take care of the issue, not just ignore it as they have done for years. Yes, get these people off our streets every night and they will get the message and move on. There are plenty of old buildings in the downtown area that can easily be converted into shelters, if we had leaders with a least some intelligence and imagination, not these political hacks we have in office now.
You’re exactly right Tracy about the homeless downtown not having any money, a car or anywhere else to go. However, I do have the ability to not patronize shops, restaurants, hotels or conventions downtown due to the skid row situation currently downtown. Trust me, it won’t take long for Downtown to look just like it did in the 70’s…no businesses, no restaurants, no conventions, no sporting events or concerts. Everything, and I do mean everything, is dying downtown. Great job BLM protest….great job Mr. Mayor…great job City Council….you have effectively turned back the clock to 1970!
Until mental health services for SMI and addiction are coordinated simultaneously to the homeless population, the problem will not get better. Many lack insight to their condition to get help- it’s not that they do not want it- they have seriously mental illness and we have no long term inpatient treatment anymore.
