Nate Feltman’s column [It’s time to roll up our sleeves and lead, June 4] spent a few sentences on the systemic racism that led us to the chaos downtown. He used considerably more words to scold looters and call for military presence in streets. Nowhere did I see any mention of what was, by all accounts of video footage and of the people there, the real agitator that sparked the violence those nights: unwarranted police escalation and accompanying police brutality.
Countless first-hand accounts and video evidence show that the protests were peaceful until IMPD started tear gassing, firing rubber bullets at, and beating the citizens they’re paid to protect. Tear gas is banned in warfare under the Geneva Convention and shouldn’t be used by the government on its citizens. Is it any wonder that in the days after officers took off the riot gear and pumped the brakes on the aggressiveness, protests remained peaceful?
