Avenue Stores LLC, a plus-size women’s apparel retailer with two stores in Indianapolis, is closing all 222 of its stores in 33 states, the company announced this week.

Locally, Avenue Stores has locations at 5838 Crawfordsville Road in Speedway Supercenter and at 5151 E. 82nd St. in Clearwater Springs. It also has Indiana stores in Fort Wayne, Merrillville and Highland.

Philadelphia-based private-equity firm Versa Capital Management has hired Gordon Brothers and Hilco Merchant Resources to handle liquidation sales for the Chicago-based chain.

The company did not say when the stores would close, but clearance sales have already begun.

Avenue carries fashions in women’s sizes 14-32. It got its start as Sizes Unlimited in 1983.

Avenue isn’t the only plus-size retailer to run into trouble this year. Dressbarn, which sells all sizes of clothing but is known for carrying full-size clothing, announced in May it was closing all 650 of its stores.

Plus-sized women’s retailer Fullbeauty Brands Inc. filed for Chapter 11 this year before winning court approval for its plan to restructure the company.
