You think? Lol. IU has been holding the fort down at IUPUI for decades. President Whitten has a fresh perspective that Indiana University needs to become even more influential and have a greater hold on the academic community. But go off JOE!

For those of us who worked hard to give IUPUI an identity and reputation there are many questions. For one, how will our Jaguars sports programs be handled. Will the Medical School now be part of IUI and an R1 university in Indy? Currently it counts towards IUB’s R1 status, which was why IUPUI couldn’t attain that status. It will be interesting.
Giles is correct. The School of Medicine was peeled off from reporting to IUPUI and assigned to IUB to bolster Bloomington’s research $$ on paper, because the Bloomington campus was under threat of being dinged on accreditation reports. (That’s also why Bloomington in recent years developed both a fine-arts program and engineering program, both of which, by the way, IUPUI already had. In fact, IUPUI remains the most comprehensive university in the state.) For years, both Bloomington and West Lafayette fought against allowing IUPUI to develop Ph.D. programs, the kind that rake in research $$. Given these historical facts and given IUPUI faculty’s significantly heavier teaching load than Bloomington faculty, the $37 million research funding figure isn’t so bad. IUPUI faculty can walk and chew gum at the same time!
IU leadership will have to stop their habit of restricting Indianapolis programs to protect Bloomington.
The is a positive change with mutual benefits for both Purdue and IU and for the city of Indianapolis. And for those who doubt a first rate learning institution with lift the perception of Indianapolis, just take a look at Columbus with Ohio State, for example. Look at institutions in Nashville, Denver, and other cities.

Amazon found the overreach regressive, recognizing legislators that advanced vindictive laws clearly aimed at punishing Indianapolis, the major state economic generator, and enacting statutes dictating how growth and planning should occur. But legislative actions were knee-jerk and subjective, without sound supporting data and completely out of sync with positive changes and trends nationwide.
Being conservative should not mean being irrational.
Of course, the latest assault on individual freedoms does not help, particularly when a reasonable policy existed. Apparently, many state legislators acting with blind partisan fealty to cultism rather that a reasonable rational approach to growth now push the state and certainly Indianapolis in a race to mediocrity.
Bring on the great university! Bring on actions to improve the capitol city.
For those looking for a comparison, what seems to be a similar split happened in Fort Wayne a few years ago, with IPFW, but with Purdue taking over a majority of the buildings and programs. Some anxiety at the start, but by all accounts I’ve seen, seems to have gone smooth.
With geographic barriers much much less than the 1960`s, this makes sense from a strategic perspective, and they have the experience to execute it – just will do it on a larger scale. Another nice capstone for the retiring Daniels.

Excellent that the Sate of Indiana has some great news and IBJ reports it! This is a win for everyone including those far beyond the borders of Indiana and the United States that will benefit from the discoveries and applied research that will now be accelerated. Indiana is very blessed to have so many world-class higher education options for Hoosiers and so many others. Public institutions include Purdue University, , Indiana University, Indiana State University, Ball State, University of Southern Indiana, Ivy Tech whICH is arguably the largest network of community colleges, and the oldest public institution, Vincennes University. Private institutions include Notre Dame, Wabash college, Manchester University, Butler University, DePauw University, Earlham College, Grace College and Theological Seminary, Hanover College, Marian University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, St. Josephs College, St. Mary’s College, Taylor University, Trine University, and Valparaiso University, just to name some of the 59 private colleges and universities in Indiana that educate hundreds of thousands of students year after year. Nice dig at the end….but Abortions are still legal in Indiana. Abortion as a method of contraception is what has been outlawed.
A correction: in the IBJ graphic, IUB is identified as the “flagship campus” in the IU system. That is incorrect. In 1974 IU established that IUB and IUPUI were to be its “core campuses,” co-equal in status, and the other locations were designated “regional” campuses. The “core campus” organization remains in place. Therefore, there is no “flagship campus.” Bloomington was merely the first campus in the system.
Vague is the right word. So far a name change and new dorm for Purdue students. How about getting faculty salaries in line with IUB? How to recruit from area’s top high schools given the commuter school rep (well deserves). When will we get a chancellor after last years expensive and failed recruitment effort? Don’t believe the hype.
I don’t get it. If this arrangement is really about making Indianapolis a major force in higher education and job creation, why doesn’t the State simply consolidate these universities into a single entity headquartered in Indianapolis, thereby eliminating the redundancies of two separate universities that each separately compete for state dollars? Why do we need two? Why not let not let Bloomington and West Lafayette be two regional campuses, as befitting their less urban locations, and have the great urban university in Indianapolis that Dick Lugar envisioned in 1969?

I never felt that the IU-PU arrangements in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne served either city well. I don’t think Indianapolis will ever have a large public university that is independent and makes decisions in the best interest of that location. That’s really unfortunate for the largest city in the state and has been a missed opportunity. Realistically speaking this new arrangement is probably as good as we will get. I’m hopeful that IU will do a better job with the Indianapolis location than Purdue does with the Fort Wayne location.
Splitting IUPUI might be a good idea, but good luck figuring that out by reading this article. It’s almost all PR gobbledygook. Of all people, educators are supposed to think and speak clearly. This would make William Zinsser and Jacques Barzun vomit.
Good point Daniel P. But as an educator at IUPUI I can assure you that our voices were not consulted about this beforehand or heard from in this article. Instead, you are hearing from administrators, whose job is to promote ‘change’ on behalf of ‘workforce development.’ Most people probably assumed that this was already the mission of IUPUI.
So, instead of IU & Purdue operating separate programs under the banner of IUPUI, IU & Purdue will operate separate programs under the new banner of IUI & a Purdue banner to be named later?
