Before the additions of Maryland and Rutgers, I would have said its too far but at this point what is the difference? The payoff will have to be enough for the schools to pay for the travel. This could get high with all the mens’s and women’s sports involved. If it boosted TV money enough, it might work.
It is all about the almighty dollar but the NCAA now truly does not consider the athletes “students”. TV is calling the shots and can you imagine IU or Purdue playing a BB game in LA with a 9pm start time that winds down at 11:30 or midnight and catching the flight back home and expect them to be in class the next morning? Ridiculous as a practical matter but that is not a consideration …

FY2021 Pac-12 distribution per school = $19.8M; Big 10 distribution per school = $46.1M. I suspect the new Big 10 media contracts will jump significantly with the additions of USC & UCLA, which will translate to per school distributions in the +$50M range. Travel challenges? Yes, but the +$50M annual distributions will cover a lot of the incremental expenses, including chartered planes when necessary…..or even a university-owned fleet of jets.
The only thing that brings all this to a crashing halt is when the media money dries up and that won’t happen as long as the viewership remains strong…..which it will as sports is ingrained in the lives of a large percentage of all families.
What Joe said word for word. Forget the travel issues. All revenue D1 teams already fly private. Prepare for a 50 team super conference to include anyone who is anybody in football. Keep control of all the $. I could point out the negatives, but as long as the TV numbers are huge, it won’t matter.
The Big Ten reportedly has its eyes set on four additional teams for expansion — two more from the Pac-12, Notre Dame and a surprising team from the ACC.
