Republican John L. Couch is now the fifth candidate to enter the May primary seeking a nomination to run in Indianapolis’ mayoral election in November. He will face Pastor James Jackson in the Republican primary.

Couch describes himself as a Republican with “independent views.”

“We all can work together to improve the safety, education, growth, and create opportunities for all city of Indianapolis residents,” he said.

Couch has run for office before, but never won. He ran to represent Indiana U.S. House District 7 once. He also ran unsuccessful campaigns to represent Indiana House of Representatives District 92, first in 2014 as an Independent and in 2022 as a Republican, losing to Democrat Renee Pack.

In the 2014 race for District 92, he was charged with stalking an opponent. He was found not guilty.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett is seeking a third term in office. So far, he faces two challengers in the Democratic primary: State Rep. Robin Shackleford and community activist Gregory Meriweather.

Another potential candidate on the Republican side is Abdul-Hakim Shabazz, an outspoken political commentator and editor of IndyPolitics.org, who said he is considering a run.

Jackson announced his candidacy in late November.
