State COVID-19 report shows 4,411 new cases, 40 more deaths

The Indiana State Department of Health on Thursday reported 4,411 new cases of COVID-19, the highest daily number in four days.

The department also reported 40 more deaths due to COVID-19.

The state said 12,561 new individuals have been tested, the largest number in four days.

The latest numbers show 48,437 Hoosiers have been fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus and 238,802 have received their first dose of the vaccine.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 fell from 2,484 on Tuesday to 2,440 on Wednesday, the seventh straight day of decreases. The high mark was 3,460 set on Nov. 30.

COVID-19 patients occupy 25.5% of the state’s intensive care beds.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals is 26.3.%.

Following are the latest COVID-19 numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health. The department updates its data daily based on information received through 11:59 p.m. the previous day.

** The health department reports the 7-day positivity rates with a six-day lag to allow time for more comprehensive results.

Indiana intensive care unit usage

Available ICU beds: 25.2%

ICU beds in use by COVID-19 patients: 25.5%

Available ventilators: 73.1%

Ventilators in use for COVID-19: 10%

*New cases, deaths and tests are previously unreported cases, deaths and tests submitted to the Indiana State Health Department in the 24 hours through 11:59 p.m. the previous day. The cases and testing categories typically contain numerous duplicates—as many as 20% or more—that are later eliminated from the cumulative totals.

  1. Alternate headline: “Hospitalizations down 30% from their peak, and ICU bed and ventilator use by Covid patients down by nearly 50% from their peaks.”

  2. It looks like the decrease in ICU usage (44) is highly correlated to the number of deaths (40) , not a great story. Folks aren’t going home healthy they are being taken out in body bags
