2 thoughts on “State lawmaker panel weighs solutions to Indiana’s lawyer shortage

  1. A key piece of this puzzle is that there aren’t enough law schools in Indiana that produce Indiana lawyers. Notre Dame is geographically located in Indiana (barely) but is no more an Indiana law school than Yale is a Connecticut law school. Few of its students come from or stay in the state. IU Bloomington (Maurer) is a state school but it bills itself as a national school and a large percentage of its graduates leave the state. So that leaves one law school that is actually Indiana-focussed – IU McKinney in Indianapolis. (Valparaiso closed its law school a few years ago.) Roughly half the practicing lawyers in Indiana are IU McKinney graduates. One state-focussed law school is not enough for a state with Indiana’s population.

  2. The existing Indiana lawyers will have more time for clients if the Court permits more pretrial conferences, status conferences, and proceedings supplemental hearings to be held via Zoom, Webex, or phone.
