One category in the Indiana State Department of Health’s daily COVID report that is still disturbingly high is deaths. The department on Friday reported 30 more deaths from COVID-19, raising the cumulative total to 14,895. The state has reported 211 new deaths over the past four days, an average of 52.8 per day.
The seven-day moving average of new deaths increased from 24 to 25 per day on Friday, the health department said.
Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 decreased from 2,336 on Thursday to 2,279 on Friday. After hitting a recent peak of 2,676 on Sept. 10, hospitalizations have fallen almost 15%. Almost 29% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients.
The state also reported 3,255 new cases of COVID-19, down from 3,659 the previous day.
More than 3.23 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Friday at 5 a.m., after a daily increase of 5,597. Department statistics say 59% of Indiana residents 18 and older are now fully vaccinated.
The state released the latest statistics for so-called breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday, reflecting data through Sept. 17. The numbers, which are updated weekly, showed that 33,851 Hoosiers who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have since tested positive for the virus, while 735 required hospitalization and 229 died. The average age of a breakthrough death was 80 years old.
