State reports another 4,819 COVID-19 cases, 109 new deaths

The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday reported 4,819 new COVID-19 cases and 109 more deaths due to COVID-19.

Reported cases have been on the rise for three straight days after dropping significantly over the Christmas holiday weekend.

Deaths have exceeded 25 in the report for 28 straight days.

The department said 8,155 new individuals had been tested, the fourth day in a row that fewer than 10,000 people had been tested after 61 straight days exceeding that number.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 dropped slightly after three days of increases, from 2,951 on Monday to 2,941 on Tuesday. The high mark was 3,460 set on Nov. 30.

COVID-19 patients occupy 30.7% of the state’s intensive care beds.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals is 23.3%.

Following are the latest COVID-19 numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health. The department updates its data daily based on information received through 11:59 p.m. the previous day.

Cumulative positivity rate unique individuals: 19.3%

Seven-day positivity rate unique individuals: 23.3%**

Cumulative positivity rate all tests: 10.5%

Seven-day positivity rate all tests: 13.7%**

** The health department reports the 7-day positivity rates with a six-day lag to allow time for more comprehensive results.

Hendricks County cumulative cases: 11,233

Boone County cumulative cases: 4,372

Hancock County cumulative cases: 5,049

Morgan County cumulative cases: 4,210

Shelby County cumulative cases: 3,338

Indiana intensive care unit usage

Available ICU beds: 21.7%

ICU beds in use by COVID-19 patients: 30.7%

Available ventilators: 68.9%

Ventilators in use for COVID-19: 13%

U.S. cases: 19,530,197

U.S. deaths: 338,831

Global cases: 82,237,082

Global deaths: 1,795,775

*New cases, deaths and tests are previously unreported cases, deaths and tests submitted to the Indiana State Health Department in the 24 hours through 11:59 p.m. the previous day. The cases and testing categories typically contain numerous duplicates—as many as 20% or more—that are later eliminated from the cumulative totals.

    1. The larger issue is that over 50% of the people testing are coming back positive. It’s one thing to have 4800 people test positive with 50,000 tests, but when you’re not testing 9,000 a day…
