The Indiana State Department of Health on Friday reported 19 more deaths due to COVID-19, raising the cumulative total to 15,713.

The seven-day moving average of new deaths rose from at 20 to 18 per day, the health department said.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 decreased from 1,634 on Wednesday to 1,599 on Thursday, the lowest number since Aug. 16. Hospitalizations reached a recent peak of 2,687 on Sept. 13. COVID patients occupy nearly 21% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds.

The department reported 2,303 new cases of COVID-19, down from 2,644 the previous day. The cumulative total of cases rose to 996,341.

More than 3.3 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Friday at 5 a.m., after a daily increase of 4,266.

The health department said 58.8% of Indiana residents 18 and older are now fully vaccinated.

The state released the latest statistics for so-called breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday, reflecting data through Oct. 7. The numbers, which are updated weekly, showed that 48,676 Hoosiers who had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have since tested positive for the virus, while 1,042 required hospitalization and 485 died. The average age of a breakthrough death was 79 years old.
