  1. She wasn’t suspended from school, just the cheer team that she lashed out against. If an employee share the same language about their job on Social Media, 100% they could be fired. If you aren’t happy with the team/opportunity, then you shouldn’t be there. Nothing to do with free speech. No one stopped her from ranting, but there are consequences. I’m glad they are suing after 4 years. Seems productive as she moves onto college.

    1. Public School children are not employees of a private company. They’re kids!
Private schools could potentially have an off-campus morality clause, but even that is somewhat questionable if they’re accepting vouchers or government assistance.
Kids should absolutely be allowed to criticize their schools, teachers, and extracurriculars – especially while off-campus – without the fear of retribution from the government. This is 100% a free speech issue.
Now, had the parents wanted to punish them for their behavior, then that would be appropriate and reasonable – but the school must stay out of it.

  2. David G. I think you totally missed the point. Free speech is for everyone, even frustrated 14 yo. No, nobody should be punished for exercising their free speech rights, ever. Its speech…it’s protected and we should never give them an inch to say otherwise…if you do…that is a slippery slope to chipping away at all rights as they see fit…rant over…

    1. So then would you support the right of a student to cuss out a teacher in class? Where’s the line?
