Tariffs are taxes that American citizens will pay.
On top of that they are regressive taxes, disproportionately taxing the “forgotten people”, that Mr. Retribution promised to protect. Base case is Trump 2.0 will be the most spectacular con in our history. Ah, but, “something something girls’ sports”
All these people complaining about Trump’s tariffs on Canada seem to have no problem with Canada’s long standing tariffs on American ag products. They range from 241% for liquid milk to 298% for butter. Guess that’s ok because, you know, Trudeau is a liberal.
We just got done with an election cycle in which all of us befuddled as to why Trump had support were told it had everything to do with the price of everyday goods. He’s literally walked into office and threatened to raise prices on everyday goods, apparently because he’s not happy with the trade deals he negotiated just four years ago with Mexico and Canada and wants to use the threat of tariffs yet again to renegotiate.
Just square that circle for me. That’s all I’m asking.

It’s almost like tariffs are something to be applied strategically in specific markets and that blanket tariffs have much broader implications.
Dominic, you conveniently ignore the giant ag subsidies/price supports to dairy, corn, and soybean (and therefore also beef) producers in the US. See: government cheese. The Canadian tariffs were designed to level that up.
But then, finesse is not 45/47’s strong point.
That’s the answer. Buy American. Why didn’t I think of that? I’ll make sure to check the “American products only” filter on Amazon, or go to the “American Products only” store.
Buy what in America? Gasoline? You do realize what we use here in Indiana comes from Canada, right? You ready to pay more every time you go to the pump?
Trump is acting a domestic terrorist to get what he wants. We are the hostages and if he loses a few of us, so what? No skin off his back. We will all pay more while the rich pay less. But apparently, as long as “those people” get kicked around, it’s all worth it, right?
You know, here’s a great idea to solve (just one of) America’s drug problems: raise the prices consumers pay through tariffs! Brilliant! This should please the simple minded because, after all, posturing toughness is way better at solving problems than making sensible policies like getting people into drug treatment programs, or imposing disincentives on manufacturers. God knows tariffs would have solved Rush Limbaugh’s drug addiction. Aren’t you glad you elected a mentally ill criminal and sexual predator?

From a CNN story today: Tariffs effectively serve as a tax on goods imported to the United States. Although Trump has repeatedly said targeted foreign countries pay the tariffs, they are in fact paid by companies that purchase the imported goods – and those costs are typically passed onto American consumers. Most mainstream economists believe tariffs will be inflationary, and the Peterson Institute for International Economics has estimated Trump’s proposed tariffs (before the new tariffs announced Monday night) would cost the typical US household over $2,600 a year.
In other words, “middle class tax increase”. His rich buddies don’t care.
Yet not a single sky screaming dim on the thread complains about Biden’s use of tariffs including the continued use of most of Trump’s tariffs. Imagine that.

Trump is apparently unable to negotiate wirh other countries without taking his own citizens as hostages. Some master negotiator.
It’s almost as though some of you can’t figure out what Dear Leader is up to either, much less can explain it. Then again many of you appear to be surprised that you pay tariffs, not other countries…
I think we all understand the strategic imperative presented by Chinese Army-owned enterprises exporting to the US. Hence both Biden and Trump laid tariffs there.
But Mexico and Canada? Those require selective tariffs, if any.
