    1. Stopping the Keystone XL pipeline was a major milestone for environmentalist and our country. Spend 10mins researching “tar sands oil” and you’ll know why. I was shocked my self.

  1. Centralizing energy use is a major component for our planets survival. This has been touted for years and it’s true. Powering vehicles from one source (power plant) instead of numerous inefficient gas engines is better for the environment. Unfortunately the cost to do so further damages the environment. Right now it’s catch 22.

  2. EV’s and what has been termed “renewable energy” are examples of “disruptive technologies”. They turn traditional technologies and industries upside down. This article illustrates issues that result from executing disruptive technologies. Trading one questionable environmental practice (open pit mining) to ameliorate an existing environmental concern (carbon emissions from internal combustion engines used for transportation). Perhaps we need to develop and sustain existing fossil fuel energy resources (Keystone XL Pipeline for example) to provide low-cost energy for current needs, AND subsidize and develop new (disruptive) technologies for energy in order to “get up on the learning curve” to solve some of the economic and technological challenges inherent to new technologies. Promote use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy to keep costs low now, which facilitates a solid revenue stream to fund R & D of renewables, by imposing a “reasonable tax” on the fossil fuel and nuclear energy used to keep us going. The challenge is to hold governments in check when they award the research and development grants to researchers … to ensure it is not pork barrel spending, favoritism, and wasteful. If we could accomplish that … it would be truly “disruptive”.
