I’ve heard of starting high, but this is rediculous on the UAW’s part.
I’m a little confused about bringing back the traditional pension. I’ve seen too many times that a company goes bankrupt and the pension is cut by huge amounts. I’ve also seen how they trap an employee at a company forcing them hit some arbitrary milestone so they don’t loose out on pension benefits. On top of that, I have seen how those arbitrary milestones suddenly shift or change when a company is having financial difficulty.
When I switched jobs in 2012, I went to a 401K pension plan with a great profit sharing component and it helped me retire at the age of 57. It also helped that the company that I formerly worked for dissolved their defined benefit pension plan and cashed me out into a 401k.
I guess a traditional pension works well for somebody that does poorly with personal savings by letting somebody else hang onto the money, but it seems more risky.
I think the UAW is absolutely nuts! Not a good image for the unions and maybe if they are off work long enough they will realize the true nature of the marketplace. I am all for fair wages for honest work but when workers demand to be paid for not being there, it is completely unacceptable to me and makes me unsympathetic to their stubbornness.
You’re telling me $32 per hour (majority without a college degree) to work and collect profit share checks isn’t enough?? That’s just criminal.
The workers are blindly letting Union leaders send them down a road of no return. EV’s are going to dominate in the future and that means less workers are need to build them. Alot of people will be put out of traditional manufacturing jobs and replaced with advanced robotics and AI. The BIG 3 may make lots a money a year but they have to reinvest alot and payout alot in supplies, overhead cost, health insurance, pensions, legal fees, taxes ect you name it. No company can or will stay in business if its losing money. I give it maybe 10 more years and one of the BIG 3 will no longer exist.
