How in the world does that help the people that were overcharged. Purely a public relation bs move.
They could just reduce their prices.
Would be great to see some of this investment go toward affordable and workforce housing. When people are in stable, safe, healthy home environments emergency room and hospital visits decrease. Lots of statewide agencies and organizations that they could work with that have systems in place to easily implement.
Erika — IU Health is investing/partnering in affordable housing projects at 22nd/Illinois and 21st/Capitol.
But I agree with everyone — it’s clear that non-profit IU Health has a profit motive they intend to protect, and that is the issue. The state legislature could improve this by requiring that (a) hospital billing structures be open and transparent and (b) non-profit health facilities actually operate as non-profits.
And why on earth is IU Health allowed to earn money from investment gains? They’re a health care company, not an investment bank.
I avoid utilizing IU Heath & Hospitals at all cost. Not only are they the most expensive around, but in my experience, the doctors are arrogant and don’t listen to the patient. They think they are all-knowing, and the patient knows nothing.
Studies have shown that essentially all of the costs of private health insurance come out of the pockets of employees in the form of premium contributions, deductibles and coinsurance, wage reductions and lower retirement benefits. And essentially all of IUH’s profits and reserves (over $9 billion) come from commercially insured patients. So, in reality, all of this “community benefit” money came from employees. What gives IUH the right to tax employees via high prices and then spend this money on other things without their consent?

IU Health does offer the highest quality of care in Indiana, and their prices should reflect that. It’s good that they are investing in Indianapolis, where they have a ton of land that they don’t pay taxes on.
That said, price discrepancies between hospitals systems for emergency care and family medicine care is pretty inexcusable, and IU Health should do something to address it. As opposed to folks seeking specialty care, people in the middle of a medical emergency and people who can’t travel for family medicine checkups do not have a choice about where they go.
How about IU Health investing in LOCAL employees to handle billing issues. It is so frustrating and difficult to work out billing and insurance coverage for ongoing health problems, since the off-shore Call Center employees do not know enough to help resolve these issues. In addition, communication and notices (no text messages and missed calls) often result in MISSED (virtual) appointments because it is impossible to get through to IU Health.
