  1. It’s “problematic” to teach Western Civilization, but it’s not “problematic” to teach children to cut off their breasts and genitals and to hate America and white people.

    1. Have you ever read the social studies textbooks used at a private Christian school? I have and did when my kids attended one. To say they were learning a rather warped version of American history would be accurate.

Hey, if you want to use your own money to send your kids there? No qualms on my end, as long as they’re able to pass the required tests as mandated by the state of Indiana. But using tax dollars … different conversation.

      https://www.theguardian.com/education/2021/aug/12/right-wing-textbooks-teach-slavery-black-immigration

    2. Joe, should taxpayers pay for an education that teaches America is foundationally racist? Why should taxpayers be paying for anti American propaganda?

    3. D.H. America was “foundationally racist.” That is not a left-wing opinion but stated fact, as shown in the Constitution (the 3/5ths clause, the ban on ending slavery for 20 years, etc.). I’m 60 and that official thinking continued to my childhood (redlining, de facto segregation in schools, etc.) and continued privately (in clubs, etc.) until VERY recently. It still continues today, though on an individual basis.

Taxpayers should be paying for an education that teaches accurate history. I agree it should not be warped — as it often is. Everything didn’t revolve around race, but a lot did. It is not anti-American to know the facts — even when those facts are against the American goals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. As it happens, I am a fan of the Great Books concept. But the list does need to be expanded to include the works of the world at large if the students are to be prepared for it. Many of the writings of the Ancient Greeks and Oscar Wilde may prove very surprising to some of these parents who thought they would be escaping discussions of sex.

Of course, it should go without saying, however, that our tax dollars should not be supporting organizations that push a particular religion. If you think they should, consider your dollars being spent on a school that pushes devil-worshipping.

  2. I appreciate the article’s attempt to include quotes from both those opposed to and in support of this charter school start up. To be clear, however, at least 35 local residents testified in strong opposition, 1 Hamilton County resident testified that he was neutral, and less than 10, of which none were from Pike Twp or Wash Twp, testified in support. (The start-up board and founders were most of those 10.)

Many more local residents attended the meeting in opposition, but did not speak. Every space in the room was filled and standing, with just 6 days notice (Msd Pike) and 4 days courtesy notice (Msd Wash) that Valor was even considering a location in Pike Twp. (And during Holy Week, Passover, the Holy Month of Ramadan, and Wash Twp spring break.

    1. Crabs in a bucket mentality: while any one crab can easily start to climb out, it will nonetheless be pulled back in by the others.
The analogous theory in human behavior is that members of a group will attempt to reduce the self-confidence of, or halt the progress of, any member who achieves success beyond the others, out of envy, jealousy, resentment, spite, conspiracy, or competitive feelings.

    2. Maryann, this simply means that the opposition was better organized and more vocal – which makes sense seeing how it’s in a blue district. Again, how does other people sending their kids to a school like this – that may be a better fit for their families – affect you or anyone else opposed?

  3. Too bad Tony Bennett’s not still the state superintendent of public instruction. Maybe he could help this charter school cheat its way into public funds, the way he helped a major Republican donor with her Christel House Academy.

Only the best people are involved in this charter school movement.

    1. BINGO John M. They actually played a huge role in integration and desegregation. Perhaps if more people were educated on the basics, we’d not see illogical arguments on this thread – like extrapolating community sentiment from the sample size of a single event.

    2. So they get a lifetime pass because of the behavior of past leadership?

Based on what I have read out of Hillsdale College, including seeing their monthly newsletter on a frequent basis … I don’t think the current leadership of Hillsdale College would have stood for any of the things their leadership did a century ago.

    3. Joe B, you are clearly showing your left-wing bias – just because they are conservative you assume that they would have been racist. You are basing your opposition on nothing else but politics, and that’s not how America works. Just because you don’t like or agree with this school’s background, why do you care if other people want to send their kids here? Just plain bias on your end.
