The project, approved last month by the health system’s board of directors, is expected to employ 500 workers when complete.
The five-story hospital will include 140 beds, 17 emergency department exam rooms, six operating rooms, three catheterization labs for advanced cardiac procedures, and up to four endoscopy rooms for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, IU Health said in a news release.
IU Health—the state’s largest health care provider—said the project is a significant milestone, coming six years after opening a primary care medical office in Fort Wayne.
“This new hospital will be a cornerstone of our commitment to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to all Hoosiers,” Brian Bauer, president of IU Health Northeast Region, said in the release. “With a leading-edge facility and a dedicated team, we are poised to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of the Fort Wayne and surrounding communities.”
A specific location for the hospital was not immediately provided.
The project also includes the construction of a medical office building that will connect to the new hospital. IU Health said in addition to the 500 employees, 60 providers will be added to “meet the diverse health care needs of the Fort Wayne community.”
It was not clear when ground would be broken on the hospital, but IU Health said it anticipates welcoming the first patients in the second quarter of 2027.
In addition to the primary care office, IU Health has two urgent care facilities in Fort Wayne, as well as multiple specialty offices for Riley Children’s Health.
