Welcome back to IBJ’s new video feature, “Leading Questions: Wisdom from the Corner Office.” Every
week, we sit down with one of central Indiana’s most respected bosses and talk shop about the characteristics of an
effective head honcho.
Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman grew up near Bedford in Lawrence County and somehow managed in high school to inhabit the dual worlds
of homecoming queen and late-night drag racer, competing with the local boys in her red Corvette on state highways. That flexibility
and competitive streak came in handy as her interest in public service and politics led to the boys-club world of the Indiana
Senate. In the video below, Skillman expands on her current role as the governor's chief consensus builder, and when strong-arm
tactics should give way to gentle persuasion.
