Heartland Film Fest grabs spotlight with $75K gift

On the brink of the opening of the semi-rival Indianapolis International Film Festival, the Heartland Film Festival announced Monday that it has received a $75,000 grant from the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation.

While the grant will help the October festival itself, the funds also are earmarked to help expand Heartland's year-round activities through its Heartland Roadshow initiative. For 2013, the Roadshow is on track to reach about 10,000 people through relationships with such groups and venues as Indiana Black Expo, The Historic Artcraft Theatre, and the Palladium's Great American Songbook Series.

"We are pleased and proud of this generous gift, and look forward to elevating and showcasing the art of film in Indianapolis as we welcome filmmakers from around the world each year to the Heartland Film Festival," said Stuart Lowery, Heartland's chief operating officer.

Disclosure: I'll be serving, voluntarily, on one of the Heartland Film Festival juries this year (as I have with this year's Indianapolis International Film Festival). The Heartland Festival is set for Oct. 17-26.
