“Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas”
For its first major show since institution paid general admission, the Indianapolis Museum of Art offers an exhibition wisely timed for the month of May. Not your standard auto show, “Dream Cars” highlights concept cars—experimental designs that were not available for public purchase. Not only does the exhibit features the cars themselves, but also conceptual drawings, historical photos, and iPads with video footage and interviews to accompany your trip. Last year's inaugural Rev event was a feast in more ways than one. With dozens of restaurants paired with Indy Car drivers and music well into the night, an annual tradition was born. This year, the same rules apply, with even more restaurants on board. Newcomers include North End Barbecue & Moonshine (teamed up with Juan Pablo Montoya), Georgia Reese's Southern Table (partnered wtih Tony Kanaan), JW Marriott (in cahoots with Pippa Mann), and Tinker Street (with Helio Castroneves riding shotgun). “Xanadu”
Actors Theatre of Indiana offers the local professional premiere of this bit of Broadway silliness based on the notoriously awful Olivia Newton-John movie. Yes, there will be roller skates and leg warmers. And songs by ELO and more. May 1-17 Studio Theatre Details
“Imagine: The Life and Times of John Lennon”
Encore Vocal Arts’s choir and soloists, abetted by actor Rob Johansen in the title roll, celebrate the life of the music legend. Added bonus: pre-show cocktails and karaoke with the winner performing onstage during the show. May 2 Marion University Theatre Details
First Friday
You’ve got to start somewhere and here are three possible starting points for your First Friday trek: There’s “Alpha Romeo Tango,” a group show at the Harrison Center inspired by the NATO phonetic alphabet; “It’s the Way They Mingle,” featuring the work of Lois Main Templeton, at Gallery 924; and, at iMOCA Gallery at the Murphy, “Old Elk Came Wondering or Throw Steel Over Their Heads” presents Erik Ullanderson’s reaction to the over-stimulation of social media. Ying Quartet with Zuill Bailey
The Ensemble Music Society presents the Billboard classical music chart-topping cellist (who was also featured on the TV series “Oz”) with the Grammy-winning quartet. The program includes music by Bach, Schumann and Schubert. May 6 Indiana History Center Details
