The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel has announced most of its 2016/17 schedule. Here's a sampling of what's in store.
On the classical side, Lang Lang returns in Sept., the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center plays in Dec., and Venice Baroque Orchestra with Nicola Benedetti stops by in Feb.
The Songbook series includes Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. and The Next Dimension, Alan Cumming (who gave a great show last year at the Cabaret at the Columbia Club), and Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra offer a Gershwin tribute. Jazz concerts include Arturo Sandoval, Dr. John, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.
There will be two country series'. The first—and only one announced so far—includes Scotty McCreery, LeAnn Rimes, Sara Evans, and The Time Jumpers (featuring Vince Gill, Kenny Sears, and “Ranger Doug” Green).
Dance performances—in the Tarkington—include Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Koresh Dance Company, and Ballet Hispanico.
The grab bag pop/blues/folk category includes George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Joan Baez, and R.E.M.’s Mike Mills (offering his concerto for violin, rock band, and orchestra). The World Stage Series brings in Havana Cuba All-Stars, sitar player Anoushka Shankar and violin virtuoso/composer Simon Shaheen.
Also on the calendar: Reduced Shakespeare Co.’s “The Complete History of America (abridged): Election Edition,” Five Irish Tenors, the Vienna Boys Choir, Jake Shimabukuro and his ukulele, and holiday shows from Sandi Patty and Dave Koz.
